Healthy Treats for Beautiful Hair
If you asked me what the number one question clients ask, it would be “How do I fix my dry/damaged hair?”
My answer: it’s a team effort! The best prescription for fixing dry, damaged hair is a combination of your stylist’s work, what they prescribe for your home care regimen, and most importantly: your commitment to put in the work.
My top 5 tips to help the health of your hair:
1. Don’t Over-Shampoo Your Hair!
Over shampooing your hair can be one of the main reasons your hair is feeling dry and dull, especially if you have curly, coarse/thick, or colored hair. By over-washing your hair you are stripping out the natural oils your scalp produces. Instead of over-washing, the night before you are planning to shampoo your hair, brush it out for about 2-3 minutes with a natural bristle brush and sleep with it. This process will distribute your scalp’s natural oils through to the ends, deeply moisturizing it. In addition to this tip, always make sure to use a sulfate free, phthalates-free, and parabens-free shampoo followed by a good hydrating conditioner.
2. Avoid Excessive Hot Tools.
Keep in mind that the less you blow dry your hair, the better it will look and feel. If you love blow outs, try to get one only once a week. Or, use hot rollers or roller sets to protect the health of your hair! Before every blowout, put in a hair treatment mixed with avocado oil for a few hours. This process will deeply hydrate your hair and get it ready for heat without damaging it.
3. Trim Your Hair Often!
One thing I see all the time are clients growing out damaged hair who don't want to get a trim. They’d rather have dry looking hair because they think they’re letting it grow out.
Healthy, trimmed hair gives the appearance of growing faster than damaged hair. We at Mauricio Hair Salon recommend getting a trim every 8-10 weeks to let your hair grow healthy without accumulating split ends. If you don’t, sooner or later those split ends will need to be cut off and then you’ll be back where you started.
4. Choose the Right Color Process for Your Hair Texture
Your hair stylist is key in the process of achieving healthy hair. He/she/they have to be able to identify what your natural texture is, and suggest which color processing would be ideal for you without damaging or weakening your hair.
Fine Hair: This type of hair is usually very fragile and tends to break easily when it gets extreme processes.
Ideal techniques: All-over color, semi-permanent colors, or subtle highlights or balayage.
Curly hair: One all-over color process or hair painting would be soft and gentle with this type of texture. Avoid extreme bleaching or double processing, that would be fatal for this type of hair and you could lose your natural textures.
Coarse/thick hair: This type of texture is usually perceived to be the strongest, but it’s actually the opposite. Coarse thick hair is more prone to breaking, so you want to stay away from harsh processes.
5. Find Your Home Care Regimen
I really can’t stress enough how important home care is to maintain #healthyhair, especially if you color your hair or use hot styling tools. Treating it with clean, non-toxic products, free of sulfates (SLS), silicones, parabens, phthalates, and formaldehydes will guarantee beautiful lustrous hair in any season.
